How can we know God’s will?

Paul prays and asks God to fill us (the church) with the knowledge of His will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives. Friends, there is only one way to know God’s will. That way is through Holy Spirit. Why do I say that?

Only Holy Spirit knows the heart of the Father. 1 Corinthians 2:11 ‘no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.’ Hence to know the will of God, you need Holy Spirit. To know God’s will you need wisdom and understanding which comes from Holy Spirit. Isaiah 11:2 ‘The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding

To know the will of God, you need Holy Spirit. To know God’s will you need wisdom and understanding which comes from Holy Spirit

How does wisdom and understanding from Holy Spirit help us know God’s will?

The wisdom that comes from Holy Spirit is described as follows by James 3:13-18

‘Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.’

What do we learn about wisdom from the above portion of scripture?

The wisdom that Holy Spirit gives us, sanctifies us to have the character of Christ and bear good fruit. It removes the unrighteousness from our lives and clothes us with the mind of Christ. Why is sanctification required to know God’s will?

The wisdom we receive from Holy Spirit, when it sanctifies us, it gives us a discerning heart to distinguish between right and wrong (1 Kings 3:9,12). Yes, we need discernment to know this indeed is God who is speaking to me and working in my life. We also need discernment to know it when satan tries to deceive us by bringing across our path the wrong people, wrong choices and wrong counsel to misdirect our steps.

Many times, satan, working through people can misdirect our steps away from God’s will through deception. Satan may deceive us into making wrong choices by bringing the wrong choices across our paths. When nothing seems to be coming right for us now, satan may use our own frustration with life to trick us into making hasty decisions which take us down the wrong path.

When Holy Spirit begins to work in us and sanctify us, He will grant us the discernment to distinguish between truth and deception.

When we don’t give room to Holy Spirit

If we do not give room for Holy Spirit to sanctify us, then discerning between truth and deception is going to be extremely hard. Why do I say that? If our minds are still carnal and unrighteous, we will always look at things in a carnal and worldly way. For the carnal mind will be driven by fleshly desires and it will never ever like the way or the will of God.

Romans 8:5-8 ‘Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

When you ask for Wisdom to know God’s will, the first thing that Holy Spirit will do in your life is sanctify you so that you will walk by the Spirit and your minds will be governed by the Spirit. Then you will begin to know the heart of God. You will discern what He wants from you. You will know which way to go and which way not to go. You will know His purpose for your life.

Sanctification is a continuous, daily process conducted by Holy Spirit. We become spiritually mature day by day through the daily sanctification work of Holy Spirit. As we submit to Holy Spirit daily, we begin to mature in our character daily. As our character matures, we will begin to look at things the way God looks at them. Our faith will be stronger. Our discernment will be higher. Whenever we ask God’s will about certain decisions we have to make, the wisdom of Holy Spirit will begin to guide us and give us the required discernment to make the correct decisions that lead us in the path of God’s will.

As we submit to Holy Spirit daily, we begin to mature in our character daily. As our character matures, we will begin to look at things the way God looks at them.

Why do we need Understanding?

The understanding which comes from Holy Spirit will guide you on how to put into action what God wants from you. To have understanding means to know how to put into action what God has willed. How must we proceed? Whom should we consult? What should the next step be? All the practical side of things come from understanding. Wisdom and understanding work together to help us fulfil God’s will for our life. We see this happen in the life of Solomon.

1 Kings 4:29 ‘And God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding.’

Understanding helps put wisdom into practical action. Solomon was able to build a beautiful temple for God because Holy Spirit also gave him the understanding on how to manage such a large, elaborate building project.’ So, knowing God’s will is not enough, we must also know how to put it into action in the exact way which the Lord wants us to. The understanding which comes from Holy Spirit helps us do that and please the Father.

Understanding helps put wisdom into practical action.

How do we receive wisdom and understanding from Holy Spirit?

How did Solomon receive wisdom and understanding? He asked for it from the Lord (1 Kings 3:1-15).

The only way to receive wisdom and understanding from Holy Spirit is through prayer. Whose prayer? Your prayer (John 14:14, Luke 11:9-13). You must pray and ask. Do not run behind prophecy.

A daily life of prayer and study of God’s Word is the only way to fellowship with the Lord and His Spirit. As you pray each day and study His Word, Holy Spirit will begin speaking to you and convicting you. When you obey Him and put into practice what He places in your heart, you will begin to spiritually mature and your will character change to reflect Christ more and more each day.

Once God begins to reveal to you His will, then go and have it confirmed by 2-3 spiritual elders (2 Corinthians 13:2). Many make the mistake of running all over the place to know God’s will instead of running to the only place where they can know God’s will. That place is God Himself. Into His presence. You must go first to Him to know His will.

So, from today, go into the presence of God and ask Holy Spirit for His wisdom and understanding. Wait patiently for Holy Spirit to work in your life and in due time, He will begin to reveal God’s will concerning every aspect of your life.

The only way to receive wisdom and understanding from Holy Spirit is through prayer. Whose prayer? Your prayer. You must pray and ask

Remember when God’s timing comes everything will fall into place in your life, beautifully. Everything in our life happens by His grace through faith. So, keep your prayers and study of the Word going on even if you do not receive an answer quickly. Holy Spirit is already working in you to do great things in your life.

May the Lord Himself bless you greatly.
